Detective Frankie Daniels has been had and by her partner of all things. Turns out he's not separated like he said and he's got three kids to boot! Not only that but he's the police commissioner's son-in-law! Now Frankie's boss, Captain Dell Wayford has been told to fire or transfer her the sooner the better. All Frankie ever wanted to do was be just like her dad, one of the Atlanta Police Department's heroes.
Dell decides on the transfer. He gets his nephew, Police Chief Matt Webber to find a place for her on his force in Purdyville, North Carolina. Now Frankie thinks Purdyville is the armpit of America and the minute she hits town she finds out that the place she rented burned to the ground. Then she finds a hotel and goes to find something to eat when she runs into one of Purdyville's finest citizens, yeah right!
Willie-Jack Pitts is not only rude and crude but he's dead drunk! When he hits on Frankie and follows her out of the restaurant, she tolerates it but it makes her very angry. Then when he grabs her she goes ballistic and beats him up which may not be the smartest thing she's ever done.
Needless to say things aren't going well for Frankie but she decides to hang in for a while and see what happens. Matt gets her hooked up with his cousin, Sissy who rents her a room. The only thing is that Sissy is a phone sex operator in the evenings. Can things get any stranger? Then of course, there's Matt. Not only is he Frankie's boss but also he's a hunk and a half. Frankie will not go there again but why does he have to be so gorgeous?
Add several mysterious circumstances, a murder, and surprises in every chapter and you will have a hard to put down book that will keep you guessing till the very end. Charlotte Hughes has got the flavor of a small Southern town down to a tee. I think she has definitely found her niche in contemporary romantic comedy!
