Having been stood up by her fiancee, Drew, on her wedding day, Katie Jonas was in no mood to see anyone, least of all her childhood friend, Neil Logan. Katie wanted to wallow in self pity for a few days after she found out Drew took her honeymoon with another woman; the honeymoon she planned to tell her big news - she was pregnant.

Neil, not knowing she was pregnant, does eventually convince her to come and stay with him for a while until things quieted down. This invitation gave him much more than he bargained for when they stop at a convenience store in the midst of a robbery. Neil, a police detective, rushes in to help and when Katie hears shots, she fears the worst. Only, she is the one who ends up slightly injured.

Neil eventually finds out she is pregnant and takes on the task to keep her safe and cared for. Meanwhile, he can’t help but notice how the kid his parents took in years ago has grown into a delectable woman.

Katie and Neil break her news of the pregnancy to his parents, owners of a successful magazine. They worry about her reputation of a single woman having a child. Neil has a solution - he will marry Katie and give the child his name. They also plan the future of Drew, or lack of it, in the child’s life.

As they live together, Katie and Neil become closer than ever. Each wonder how they can ever care for each other without the possibility of pain. Can Katie ever care for Neil, or her child, without fearing the closeness? Can Neil get over his personal ghosts to love a woman without fear or guilt? Will the marriage in name only turn into something more?

Charlotte Hughes demonstrates her remarkable specialty for romantic comedy in this enjoyable book. The dialogue between Neil and Katie will make readers laugh out loud. Some of the lines Neil tosses back at Katie make you wish to know him personally. He is a dream man, sexy and funny, who comes to the rescue of a lady in distress. How can anyone not admire that?

Worth reading just for the laughs,
Miriam
