Neil, on the other hand, is a single man, a detective who gives his all to his job. He may have been raised with money and a silver spoon, but he's never wanted to be in his father's business. He's always wanted to be his own man and when he had the chance, he chose to be a cop, money or no money in the bank. He might be well off, but his job is his first priority and even if he does say so, he's a good cop. He's out there on the street, quietly dealing with the bad guys as much as he can. He and Katie have never really seen eye-to-eye and it's been years since he's lived at home but when he finds that Katie's been jilted at the altar, his parents persuade him to check up on her. He knows she's distraught but you can imagine his surprise when he finds out that the good-for-nothing who left her at waiting at the altar has also left her three months pregnant. Neil, being the hero that he is, 'volunteers' to marry Katie and give the baby a well-deserved name.
This is a story that everybody will say 'oh, same old, same old' but Charlotte Hughes managed to give a great spin to an old tale. I loved the relationship developing between Neil and Katie from the very first word on the very first page. While there may have been no surprises, this tale was a great one. It was fast paced, well written and made you want to read the next line, the next paragraph, the next page.
Charlotte Hughes is not an author that I'm familiar with but you can bet that she's one I'll be keeping my eyes open for from now on. She has a great sense of humour which comes through in her writing very well and there were times when I laughed out loud in this book. Katie is spicy in her personality and gives Neil a run for his money, right from the very beginning. Neil, on the other hand, is a hero everybody will fall in love with. Even the ending, while it does take a serious turn for a moment, lends to the overall, daily truthfulness of two people who never expected to find love but found it in abundance with the partner they never expected to be with.
This is a run, don't walk, to pick up book and I highly recommend it for those who love quick reads as much as I do. I'm so glad I volunteered to read this one. It will stay in my memory for a long, long time.
