Writer Charlotte Hughes: Early Years

Charlotte Hughes was born in the small town of Williamston, S.C., the oldest and only girl of three children. “I weighed 5 lbs. & 4 oz., small enough to fit into a shoebox.” The family moved to Texas when she was fourteen days old.

Charlotte’s mother was only eighteen-years-old when she gave birth to her first child. “Sometimes it feels as though the two of us grew up together. She’s a very young 64 who divorced my stepfather only a year after my own divorce. We have become best friends and share dating tips.”

Charlotte began reading at an early age. Oddly enough, the first book she remembers reading was “Charlotte’s Web,” now the title of her website. From there she went on to read Nancy Drew mysteries. “In high school and college, I was force-fed a lot of what is considered great literature. I must’ve been a shallow person because I didn’t appreciate it at the time, and I don’t remember most of what I read. I am only now beginning to enjoy some of these works.” What Hughes does remember is her connection with Southern writers such as Harper Lee, Flannery O’Connor, Katherine Anne Porter, William Faulkner, and later, Pat Conroy. “The first time I read something by Eudora Welty, I got goose pimples. I thought, that woman has my voice!
